Now that the weather is grey and cold, it’s nice to think about traveling to warmer, more exotic locations. There are now many terrific options for the eco-seeking vacationer that range in price, adventure, and level of accommodation. Travelers can find almost any nature of vacation ranging from helping to rebuild hiking trails or take yoga class in the jungle.

Here are just two examples of the options available for sustainable travel.

The eco-resorts like the Hotelito Desconocido in Mexico (60 miles south of Puerto Vallarta) includes alternative powered ceiling fans and biodegradable products. At night, the resort, rooms and pathways are lit by the soft glow of candles and torches. It has 24 bungalows built on stilts overlooking the water. The menu consists of Mexican and international cuisine containing seafood and fresh organic vegetables that are grown right on the property. They also have a spa with the whole assortment of treatments.

Or, try a volunteer vacation safari, such as the Eco-Resorts safari trip where you spend two weeks getting an introduction to the safari country . The mornings are spent working at a children’s home in the town of Malindi, Kenya. The afternoons are spent exploring the coastal area of Watamu, rich in bio-diverse flora and fauna and marine life. But wait – there’s more! You will fly to the island of Lamu for an ight on the first weekend and experience a two-night safari in the famous Masai Mara on the second weekend.

Thank you to everyone who came out to see us on Saturday for our Holiday Gala! We were able to gather a generous amount of food for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, and the artwork on display from Artouring and the Artist’s Co-op was enjoyed by all. If you weren’t able to make it out, we will be accepting food and cash donations for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada through Friday, December 14th. Also, artwork will be on display through the end of December. Be sure to come check it out! Original art from our talented local artists will make great holiday gifts for your loved ones.  The Kiley Ranch Welcome Center is open 10:00-5:00 Wednesday thru Sunday.

Even if you can’t make it out to join us on Saturday, December 8th, be sure to stop in the Kiley Ranch Welcome Center Wednesday thru Sunday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm throughout the entire month of December and check out the lovely art on display. You will have the opportunity to view wonderful pieces from the local artist’s of Artouring and the Artist’s Co-op, and if something strikes your fancy, you will even have the option to purchase the piece.

 Artouring gives members of the public the opportunity to visit local artist’s studios and get a behind-the-scenes look at their craft. Participants can ask artists about their techniques and inspiration and get a detailed look at how beautiful pieces are created.
