November 26th, 2007 | General, Green Byte

In the past 10 years we have seen an ever increasing selection of holiday lights. From the “icicle” style, to the “net” and the pre-strung trees, the options appear to be endless. And now, thanks to the demand for more energy efficient products the LED holidays have hit the mainstream.

LED lights use about 10% of the energy of incandescent bulbs and have a much longer life. LED holiday lights have a life of over 100,000 hours! Check out some options at environmentallights.com.

Green Byte V6: “Have an Organic Thanksgiving”

November 19th, 2007 | General, Green Byte

A recent poll conducted for the Grocery Manufacturers of America (GMA) showed that 51% of Americans will make at least one organic dish this Thanksgiving holiday.

The recent involvement of the USDA in certifying what is and what is not organic has not only raised awareness of organic foods, but it has also increased the demand and the market segment of the organic foods movement.

Start by asking your local grocer what organic (free-range) meat, fruits, veggies and other items they offer. It might be difficult to locate all of your Thanksgiving Day items in one place. Diamond Organics has been listed by many national websites as a great place to purchase organic turkeys. They carry a wide array of organic products and are based in Central California – not too far from home.

Also remember to reduce your trash and practice recycling during the holidays. All of the pumpkin filling cans and plastic sour cream containers should be rinsed and placed in your recycling bins for pickup. Try to seek out the biodegradable plates and cups and avoid the use of Styrofoam. Turn the lights off at night and turn down that thermostat when you are cooking all day. The heat from the kitchen should keep the house nice and warm!

Enjoy the holiday!

Green Byte V5: “What is a Zero Energy Home?”

November 12th, 2007 | General, Green Byte

A Zero Energy Home (ZEH) is a home that produces at least as much energy as it needs to function. The home is still connected to the utility grid, but it is considered to have “net zero” energy consumption. Any excess energy production gets put back into the grid and many times can be “net metered” and provide the homeowner with the full retail value for that energy.

property.jpgPardee Homes took part in a Zero Energy Home project in Las Vegas back in 2004. Working with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)they built a 5,300 SF home that uses solar cells on the roof to provide electricity and solar hot water system for their water. The home is said to use 90% less energy than a standard home of the same size built to code.

The State of Nevada has enacted legislation that provides for the net-metering** of renewable energy generation. For systems up to 100kW (typically homeowners) are eligible to receive credits on any additional power (net excess generation or NEG) not exceeding 150% of the customer’s peak demand. Those credits get carried forward to the next billing month.

Even with these incentives, homeowners may still find a 10 to 15 year pay back. However, planning for the future and the ever increasing price of energy, it could pay off sooner than we all think!

For more detailed information on the opportunities available, see the Database for State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency website.

**Net metering is a utility resource usage and payment scheme in which a customer who gnerates their own power is compensated monetarily

Green Byte V4: Air Fresheners – not so FRESH

November 1st, 2007 | General, Green Byte

It’s not easy to always have fresh flowers to brighten up your house. It can also get expensive. Most people feel that the most affordable thing to do is spray some air freshener when things get a little stale or you burn the pot roast. What a new study from the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) says is that the “cost” of those sprays may be much more that we first thought. Spray and solid air fresheners were tested, 14 in all, and 12 of them were found to have phthalates in them (even the “all-natural” and “unscented” ones).

Pthalates are known to interfere with hormone and testosterone production. Children and unborn babies are particularly vulnerable to the toxins. The State of California notes that five types of pthalates – including one detected in air fresheners – are “known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm.” Still, pthalates are used in many common consumer products — to soften plastics in children’s toys, as sealants and adhesives in nail polish, and as solvents in perfumes and fragrances.

If you have to use a spray, editors of Building Green TV recommend Mate Mist as a natural alternative.
